When selecting (opening) a particular data file, the user is presented with a standard Windows file dialog. In this dialog, two items need to be specified before the files available for selection are presented:
- one needs to select the correct directory! For example, for MC-SET data files, the directory to be selected is the defined DATA directory, where all the data files are kept
- one needs to select the correct file extension, depending on the required type of file. For example, to select a specimen file, the extension should be .spc.

Creating a new data file
Invoce the File Open/Create dialog, and you will be presented with the standard Windows File Dialog. See the following image about what to do in this dialog, before pressing the Open button (buttons may have different names, depending on the version of Windows being used).
After you pressed the Open button above, you will be shown the an intermediary dialog, followed by the data file editing window (which will depend on the type of data file being created. In the case of the following images, this is a specimen definition dialog).
